Taking action to care for protected areas

The results of biodiversity conservation, scientific research and environmental education generated by the Ornithological Observatory correspond to the objectives of governmental and civil society programs, in Brazil and abroad, for the protection of natural resources, in general, and of the Atlantic Forest biome, specifically.

The Ornithological Observatory is aligned with the following initiatives listed below.  Next to them, where appropriate, the word "map" provides a link to visualize the proximity of a location or the insertion of the Observatory in these initiatives.

  • Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve  (map);

  • Program of Priority Areas for Biodiversity Conservation, of the Ministry of the Environment (map);

  • Brazilian National System of Protected Areas (SNUC), which coordinates the creation and management of the Conservation Units, as the officially protected areas in Brazil are called. Among them is the Nascentes do Iguaçu Ornithological Observatory RPPN (map)

  • National Action Plan for Conservation of Birds of the Atlantic Forest, by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation  (ICMBio);

  • Strategic Areas for Biodiversity Conservation and Restoration in the State of Paraná, from the Paraná Government  (map);

  • Serra do Mar Heritage Listed, also by the Paraná State Government  (map);

  • Environmental programs in the municipality of Piraquara, such as the protection and preservation of springs, as part of the "Municipal Basic Sanitation Plan", and the "Adopt a Spring Program", which aims to promote the voluntary protection of springs in Piraquara (map);

  • Strategic Bird Conservation Program in Brazil, an initiative led by the non-governmental organization SAVE Brasil with the objective of identifying, monitoring and protecting a network of critical areas for birds and biodiversity in general (map);

  • LIFE Certification, which recognizes companies' investments in biodiversity, and for which support for the maintenance of the Ornithological Observatory may become eligible.

In addition to these initiatives, the Ornithological Observatory also contributes to the conservation of the region delimited by the Atlantic Forest Great Reserve (map) and is inserted in a set of Conservation Units (protected areas) (map) to protect the natural and cultural heritage.

The correspondence between these initiatives and those developed at the Observatory can be better understood in the document (in Portuguese):  Contribuição Institucional do Observatório Ornitológico Nascentes do Iguaçu para iniciativas governamentais e não governamentais favoráveis à conservação da biodiversidade (Institutional Contribution of the Ornithological Observatory Nascentes do Iguaçu for governmental and non-governmental initiatives favorable to the conservation of biodiversity).
