Partnerships to expand results
The Nascentes do Iguaçu Ornithological Observatory complements its management through dialogue and joint action with government agencies, citizen platforms and educational and research institutions, and the Third Sector. The purpose of this management strategy is to support and expand the dissemination and study of local biodiversity, with a focus on birds. It also aims to enhance results and influence the development of public policies that favor biodiversity conservation and the protection of natural areas in the Atlantic Forest.
The list below shows the institutions and citizen platforms with which the Observatory acts in convergence.
APAVE (www.apave.org.br)
The Paraná Association of Green Areas Protectors (APAVE) works to create and expand Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs) in the state of Paraná. To do so, it brings together people who take the initiative to protect natural areas — often making their personal or family assets available for the collective benefit of society as a whole. The Ornithological Observatory is a member of APAVE and is fully aligned with the purposes of this Association.
BPAmb – Força Verde (www.pmpr.pr.gov.br/BPAmb)
Together with the Environmental Police Battalion — "BPAmb - Força Verde", the Observatory has a partnership relationship, for the exchange of information and support in the inspection and repression of environmental crimes detected on the Observatory's perimeter and/or in its surroundings.
Brazilian Ornithological Records Committee (CBRO) (www.cbro.org.br)
Created in 1999, the Committee has among its main objectives: (i) to keep updated the list of bird species that occur in Brazil, including resident species, regular and accidental visitors; and (ii) to suggest the most appropriate taxonomic and nomenclatural treatment for Brazilian birds. The 12th edition of the list, published in 2015 and available on the CBRO website, served as a reference for the elaboration of the bird list of the Ornithological Observatory.
Atlantic Forest Great Reserve (www.grandereservamataatlantica.com.br)
The largest remaining continuous area of the Atlantic Forest, of which the Ornithological Observatory is part, is defended by a joint effort of several institutions. The purpose is to improve the management standard of the Conservation Units (protected areas) and involve local communities in conservation work. It also proposes a development model that reconciles the economy with the preservation of the environmental and cultural heritage of this region. The Great Reserve follows the coastline and the mountain range of the Atlantic Forest between the south of the state of São Paulo, eastern Paraná, and northern Santa Catarina.
Instituto Água e Terra (IAT) (www.iat.pr.gov.br)
The Instituto Água e Terra ("Water and Land Institute" — IAT) is the authority responsible for inspecting and protecting the environmental heritage in the state of Paraná. With this same purpose, the Nascentes do Iguaçu Ornithological Observatory supports IAT in studies and actions that aim to ensure the quality of ecosystems in the adjacent areas of the Serra da Baitaca State Park, a Conservation Unit managed by this state environmental authority and of which the Observatory borders are only 430 meters away. Additionally, this proximity may make the local structure a support point for surveys that IAT may want to do in order to expand the Park. The location of the Ornithological Observatory also favors actions in buffer areas of two other Conservation Units managed by IAT: to the south, the State Environmental Protection Area of Piraquara, and, to the north, the Environmental Protection Area of Iraí.
Piraquara City Hall (www.piraquara.pr.gov.br)
Through the Municipal Secretary of Environment, the municipality of Piraquara acts in the exchange of information and support in the inspection and compliance with the municipal legislation applicable to Recreio da Serra residential subdivision, particularly those with impacts on the Ornithological Observatory.
SPVS (www.spvs.org.br)
The Society for Wildlife Research and Environmental Education (SPVS) is a non-governmental organization that develops nature conservation projects. One of its initiatives is the Biodiversity Condominium, which encourages the protection of private and public natural areas in urban environments in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba.
eBird (ebird.org)
The eBird platform is used by the Observatory for queries and research on birds. Likewise, those interested in furthering their knowledge of the species that occur in the Reserve are encouraged to learn about and use this online database of birds from around the world. It is both accessible and collaborative, meaning that eBird users can contribute data from their bird observations.
WikiAves (www.wikiaves.com.br)
The Ornithological Observatory uses the WikiAves platform as a database to disseminate additional information about the birds that occur in the Reserve. It also guides and encourages interested parties to access Wikiaves. This platform provides free and easy-to-use tools for storing photographic and audio records of birds observed in Brazil.
